Tues Sept 22: Westport NY to Whitehall NY (lock C12)

Another absolutely stunning day of cruising today.  We stayed an extra day in Westport to slow our roll and avoid getting too close to the Nor’easter.

We’re back to having trains along the shoreline.
About a dozen seagulls were following us. I think it was because the boat was stirring up some fish in the water that made them easier game.

The eagles and egrets were fishing too.

We passed Fort Ticonderoga, a reconstructed 18th-century fort. It’s a 2,000-acre museum now. The capture of Fort Ticonderoga occurred during the American Revolutionary War in 1775, when a small force of Green Mountain Boys led by Ethan Allen and Colonel Benedict Arnold surprised and captured the fort’s small British garrison. The cannons and other armaments at Fort Ticonderoga were transported later to Boston by Colonel Henry Knox in the noble train of artillery and used to fortify Dorchester Heights and break the standoff at the siege of Boston.

Each time we’ve traveled this way, Peter has wanted to stay here at Chipman Point Marina, but it just hasn’t worked out for one reason or another. It’s run by a mother and her son. It’s near one of the narrowest sections of Lake Champlain in Orwell VT. The 1810 stone building quarried on-site served as an early merchandise shipping point, alongside a massive 1824 four-story stone building that is the marina’s main store and hub today.
Peter and I each took pics in almost exactly the same spot.
We passed up Whitehall Marina to go through the first lock of the Champlain Canal and stayed at a free city dock. Seeing the marina brought back some funny memories of our stay there five years ago.
