Wed Sept 9-11:  Carillon to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue (Sainte Anne Lock)

We got an early start on a chilly overcast morning in the hopes of beating the wind and thunderstorms predicted in the afternoon.

As we left Carillon, we saw the original lock and lockmaster’s house.

When the rain started, we moved to the inside helm, which was fine on the wide-open river with no other boat traffic.

We dropped just three feet in the Sainte Anne Lock in the pouring rain.  The same floating dock system inside the lock made the descent easy.

Peter walked into town and found a pastry shop with delectable treats.

We ran into Frank again. He’s gained a little weight and some fur since last time we saw him.

Peter helped Frank to dock this morning. Frank was completely soaked from head to toe and had quite a story to tell. Frank was moored here yesterday at the dock wall in Sainte-Anne, but to honor the maximum two-night stay rule, he anchored his boat out in the lake a mile east, and then went to visit his ex-wife in Montréal. Early this morning, he got a call (his boat is for sale and has a sign on it with his phone number) from a guy who said Frank’s boat was drifting very close to his dock. Frank’s ex-wife drove him back to the lake, where he did indeed see his boat drifting. He jumped in the lake and swam to his boat so he could return it to the mooring at the lock! It was a lot of trouble to have gone to, especially considering that the lockmaster told us they have gone as far as taking another boat owner to court for refusing to honor the maximum stay. Apparently, four boats moored here stay pretty much all summer long.

We had breakfast at a charming cafe in town before we got underway at 11:30 AM to time our arrival for the 4:00 PM lock reservation, but once we left Sainte-Anne and got out on the open water, we quickly realized it was too windy to be safe.  The next lock reservation isn’t until Saturday, so we’ll stay longer in Sainte Anne than planned.

The hydrangeas in front of the café où nous avons pris le petit-déjeuner – see I can speak French now 🙂
Some of the old houses in town that back onto the water
We listened to some great live music from a lock wall again.
