Tues Sept 8:  Montebello to Carillon Lock

We had glassy, cool water for three hours down the Ottawa River today, and just one lock at the end, which we went through and where we spent the night.

We reached mile 2,000 on the 115th day of our trip, just shy of the Carillon Lock! Map pin:  https://maps.app.goo.gl/La1hDTL2GFTre36X6

The lock was right next to a massive hydroelectric dam that supplies 10% of Quebec with power.

After seeing tons of boats out on the water yesterday during the holiday, I think we saw a grand total of three today. We were glad we did the Carillon Lock today instead of yesterday because the lock master told us he locked through 70 boats yesterday and only seven today. We would have been rafted and tight with other boats, but today we were on our own.

This lock is the only one we’ve done where we tied to a floating dock inside the lock instead of tying directly on the lock wall.  The floating dock was attached to bollards that moved up and down steel shafts that dropped us 68 feet.

Once we passed through the Carillon Lock, Québec was on both sides of the river.
