We’re continuing to see the first signs of autumn in the cooler temperatures and a few trees are changing color.
We had to slow down to wait for a couple of cable ferries to cross.
There were two spots where we were exposed to open Lake Ontario that were rough seas, but that was only about an hour and a half combined.
The water by the Confederation Basin Marina in Kingston was very busy with boats including a sailboat race that Peter maneuvered around, and the wind was strong when we were docking, but fortunately there were three dock hands to help us.
We decided to have dinner in town at Chez Piggy in order to save our groceries for when we start on the Rideau. Kingston is a great town with historic limestone buildings and a hopping downtown waterfront even on a Wednesday evening.
Aug 27: A fierce but thankfully brief storm passed through this morning, but the winds remain strong, and it would be difficult even to get out of our slip safely.

Tomorrow we have to cross under the LaSalle Causeway before we enter the Rideau Canal system. After there was damage and then demolition of the original bascule bridge, a temporary modular bridge was installed which doesn’t have a standard operational swing or lift mechanism, so the entire section is physically uninstalled and removed by cranes. This happens only on Sundays to let tall marine vessels pass while trying to minimize weekday commuter gridlock. When the span is removed, it completely blocks all vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist traffic for 14 to 16 hours per operation, so the strictly Sunday opening is an attempt to try to balance recreational boat access to the Rideau Canal with city traffic flow.
We were trying to time it so we’d pass through on a Sunday, but here we are wanting to go through on a Friday. So we’ll have to take down the radar mast and bimini, I hope for the last time this trip, in order to fit under the standing span.
