Tues Sept 1: Poonamalie to Burritts Rapids (R32-17)

We thought today was going to be a wash out because rain was predicted for most of the day, but it turned out to be a beautiful, sunny, breezy day and we ended up doing 13 locks! But we only progressed 23 miles descending 104′ (about 4’/mile). Locks 34 & 33 were off to the side of the main route, so we didn’t use those locks.

We went through the Poonamalie Lock where we had stayed last night. Then we entered a wide open wetlands before we started hitting locks again.

Somewhere along the way we picked up an extra passenger. We gently suggested they disembark on the grass at Smith Falls.

We met a nice guy named Frank in Smith Falls who was single-handing a boat bigger than ours. We locked through with him all the way to Burritts.

We always feel bad when we hold up cars at swing bridges, but one lockmaster dismissed our concerns by saying the canal system was here first.

All along each canal systems we have met interested spectators, many of whom film us and many who ask all about our trip and where we are headed. Often they are surprised at how far we’ve come. Today was no different, and we had even more paparazzi than usual. We met one woman who was originally from Hagerstown! And she did mission work in Estonia. Such a small world 🌎
