We reached the Couchiching lock about an hour after we left the marina. The timing was perfect as two other boats were coming out when we arrived. Another trawler locked through with us, but then we had to wait for the notorious railroad swing bridge. We waited on a floating dock at the lock for about a half hour when the Parks Canada staff told us a train was about to cross the bridge and they wanted us at the bridge so we’d be ready to cross under as soon as the train passed…we headed right out. Just as we got to the bridge, we saw the train starting over. It took about 20 minutes to pass, and then the bridge started to open. Then it closed. Another 20 minutes. Just as we were thinking of dropping anchor and lowering the radar mast and bimini, lo and behold it opened all the way. We thanked the workers profusely as we passed under, glad never to see that f***ing bridge ever again.

Finally we were out on the open water of Lake Couchiching again, headed to the marina where we had spent a week on the way to Georgian Bay. This time we’re hoping we only stay two nights, enough time to grocery shop, do laundry, eat lunch at the Mariposa Market, and hit the LCBO. Oh, and Peter needs a haircut, so we’re packing it all in.
We met our new boating friends, Jennifer and Gord from Penetanguishene, for dinner near the Orillia marina. They’ve been so friendly and welcoming and shared a wealth of information with us about the Trent Severn and Georgian Bay. We’ve been so grateful for their friendship and guidance.
