July 17:  We made it to Georgian Bay!  We’re done with locks for a few weeks as we make our way up toward the north channel and Makinaw Island and back again. And the smoke lifted to reveal a beautiful clear morning.

We had a short trip to a Parks Canada dock Peter has had his eye on for a long time. It’s a beautiful spot in Ojibaway Bay.  We planned to spend two nights as Saturday promised rain storms and high winds. It’s the perfect shelter protected by rocks and trees all around and a solid dock.

We got the kayaks out again and enjoyed a gentle paddle.  I appreciate the different perspective the kayaks provide: so cool and quiet right on top of the water.

When we arrived this morning, there was only one other boat docked with us. By evening, though, the docks were full. We think that most of them were anchored and wanted to be docked before the predicted storm.

July 18:  We had another tremendous thunderstorm with quite a light show and rolling thunder last night.  This time we didn’t have to worry about power on any locks, bridges, or docks since we are relying on our generator for the next few days. It rained hard for a couple of hours this morning, but then we wondered what happened to the predicted high winds.  They came, and we were glad we were secured on the dock.

A Parks Canada staff member came to tell us that a bear was snacking from a thicket of blueberry bushes and that if we wanted to hike the nearby trail we should be on high alert.  We decided to stay on the water for the afternoon.  The wind never really died down, but the sun and some patches of blue sky emerged in the late afternoon and evening.
