We didn’t get underway this morning before the first group of boats behind us locked through.
The smoke lifted a little this morning but there was a heavy fog to start. It’s expected to continue to lift today and tomorrow.
The topography has changed with a lot more rock face in view and the evergreens crowd out the disiduous trees. This stretch is beautiful but crowded with cottages.
Today we did something truly amazing. We piloted the boat over land on a railroad lift from one body of water to another below.
We docked the boat first so we could get out and observe some other boats going over first.
Near the center of the basin is the original small railway lift that is only 50 feet long and could carry 18 tons which generally limited it to carrying one large boat. It’s no longer in service.
The current larger railway lift can carry 110 tons and vessels up to 100′ in length. More importantly for us, with it’s complex system of straps and rams in can carry a combination of boats up and down each trip.
We had been traveling with Time for Us and they were on the blue line ahead of us when we finished watching the other boats so they were in front of us on the lift. Just as well because I don’t think my nerves could have taken being the boat in front.

High winds tested Peter’s skills all along our route and as we entered our last lock for a few weeks at the end of the Trent Severn Waterway.
It was a little choppy for our brief crossing in open Georgian Bay. We stayed the night at an enormous marina in Midland with over 600 other boats.
