We continued up the lovely Otonabee River toward Peterborough.

Thus far, we have been locking by ourselves or with one other boat at a time. Today, though, we were in a very small lock with two other 50′ boats. We had been waiting for about 15 minutes for the lock to open. Just before it did, the other boats came up behind us. We pulled into the center, thinking there was only room for us. Nope! They squeezed all three of us in, so we had to move to the very front. I was chatting with the captain of the boat behind us as we waited to ascend. He said he had been in several other locks where they were packed in the same way, but his hands were shaking from the stress of pulling in behind us. He was used to using a GPS-enabled remote control to guide him in, but his remote was broken.

After we got through the lock, we docked at a little city-run marina on the south side of Little Lake. The marina was taken over this summer by a conservancy, and the employees were mostly college students who were incredibly helpful and pleasant. The marina itself, however, needed a lot of work. We had a pretty view of the fountain in the middle of the lake for the evening.
