Fri June 5: Scotia NY to Amsterdam NY (locks 8-9)

The nebo link didn’t work today 😦

Today we did locks 8-10.  By lock#9, the wind had really picked up, and it was a lot swirlier than the other locks, I think, because the water was coming in the lock right behind our boat. We got blown all the way to the other side of the lock, and we had to let go of the ropes.  I only just managed to keep the swim platform from banging onto the lock wall on the other side.  Fortunately, the gate opened just then, and Peter drove us out of the lock safely.  We decided we need more fenders so that if that happens again and we actually hit the opposite wall, we won’t do damage to our boat or other boats if there are any next to us.

We much prefer to be outdoors and spend our time underway at the upper helm, but Peter needs to be at the lower helm when we’re in the locks, so I can hand him one of the lock ropes. As we’re approaching a lock, I go downstairs first and switch the helm control to myself, then Peter comes down and takes over the helm while I move outside and prepare to grab a lock rope.

We continued to wind our way around the Mohawk River.

Arrowhead Marina and RV Park

We opted for the marina in Amsterdam rather than staying on a lock wall because they are calling for thunderstorms for the next two days, and we didn’t want to be stuck somewhere without access to an electric power pedestal.

We ate our dinner on the patio at the Amsterdam Marina while we waited for our laundry to finish.
