Sun May 31: Poughkeepsie NY to New Baltimore NY (Donovan’s Shady Harbor Marina)

As we were getting ready to leave the slip this morning, the wind had died down from yesterday, but it was still a consideration, and even though it was slack tide, the water was pushing us onto the dock.  We were tucked into a tight spot with a behemoth pleasure tugboat very close to us.  We were considering our options when the dockmaster, Keith, came to our rescue.  It was a thing of beauty.  Keith hung onto our bow line on the dock and called out to Peter, “Cappy, now baby forward.  But I don’t wanna hear that engine! “Cappy, a hard port turn.”  “No engine!!”  “Now baby back.”  “Hard turn starboard!”  Et voilà!  We spun like a top in place, and we were on our merry way.  Peter wanted to go back and do it again, but I told him no.  Keith has better things to do than spin us around all day.  All that water chestnut to pull up, poor guy.

We saw all the landmarks from the water that we had seen from our uber the evening before, Marist College and the CIA.  We could just see the top of the Vanderbilt Mansion peaking through the tops of the trees, but I missed the pic.

CIA

There were several lighthouses as we chugged along north and the shadowed green Catskill Mountains to our west.

Kingston Lighthouse
Farmers Market at Kingston

Saugerties Lighthouse

We had planned to dock for the night in Hudson NY, at the Hudson River Power Boat Association, but when we arrived at the pump-out dock, we couldn’t get the pump-out to work, so we had to quickly change plans, as the last pump-out we tried wasn’t working either. Instead, we went the extra hour north to Shady Harbor Marina.

We learned the hard way that you have to get a pump-out at every possible opportunity.  You cannot depend on the next pump-out to be in working order, or you’re shit out of luck.  Quite literally.

It was a little tricky docking in the wind again, but Peter got us in safely.
