Stress-free departure this morning – not – almost touched bottom in the channel back out to the C&D Canal. I guess world-class docks don’t include a lot of dredging. But the slip was easy to get out of. We crossed the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal into the Delaware River with a nice 5-knot current at our tail, speeding us along. I only took pictures of a few of the many bridges over the canal.
The Delaware River opens to the Delaware Bay, which is very scenic if you like nuclear power plants, power lines, and cargo ships. Peter was telling me that Biden and Bradley fought hard in the 90s to prevent any development along the Delaware and New Jersey shorelines, so most of it is state and federal land.
We had our excitement for the day when a Del Monte container ship radioed us “the pleasure cruiser in the channel” to basically get the hell out of their way because he was about to pass another cargo ship, and they were gonna need every square inch of the channel. We were happy to oblige, as our other option was to get squashed under their considerable wake, and so we moved 10° closer to the power plant. Peter has been experimenting with the time-lapse video, so he took one of the cargo ships passing. After they passed, Del Monte thanked us for staying on the bridge-to-bridge channel and for moving over.
The only other features along the seven hours south were Ship John Shoal and Miah Maull Ship lighthouses, but we did have our first dolphin sighting of the trip. Yay!
The last hour on the bay was a little choppy, and the Cape May ferry was coming out just as we arrived, but Peter steered us past it expertly.
